Last weekend we had a lot of fun taking students from Shelter Rock Church to our annual youth rally called Impact sponsored by Long Island Youth For Christ headlined by Christian hip hop artist Andy Mineo. Our friends The Walking Tree also played. Former Harlem Globe Trotter Seth Franco spoke and challenged students about the choices they make and their ability to have an impact in this world. The next evening our family went to New Jersey and enjoyed the Newsboys concert featuring For King and Country and Rapture Ruckus. What a great night of music! It was nostalgic for me having my 15 & 12 year old daughters at a Newsboys concert more than 20 years after I was watching them as a teenager.
“I want to ruin my life by the time I turn 30.”
Most teenagers and 20-somethings would never say it that way. More often what they say is:
“I just want to have fun,”
or,
“I just want to be happy.”
They have bought into the old “If it feels good, do it” philosophy of western culture. Unfortunately, that translates into acting without any regard for consequences beyond immediate gratification.
In his book, How To Ruin Your Life By 30, author Steve Farrar lays out nine easy steps one can take to achieve a dysfunctional life by the end of 3 decades. If, however, one is interested in not having a life in shambles, Farrar offers some great advice. Addressing topics such as purpose, vocation, spirituality, sex, relationships, and education, he challenges readers to consider the power of their choices and to choose wisely.
This book is ideal for high school and college students (perhaps as a graduation gift), and could easily be used to facilitate conversations between parents and children or as a discussion guide for student small groups.

We entered the stadium and went down to left field for batting practice, and Natalia was given a ball by one of the Tampa Bay Rays’ players! She was SOOO excited! What a thrill! During the pre-game ceremonies, Mariano Rivera was recognized, so we were able to see him. The Yankees ended up losing, and he did not come into the game, but it was a great night with Natalia and a chance to see him at the stadium just one more time.
In the third inning they announced that the bobble heads had arrived and we ran to get in line … and were promptly marched from the first level all the way to the fourth to join the line all the way back down to the first level for pickup. It was crazy, but we decided to just stay in line. It took about 35 minutes, but we got our bobble heads. My guess is that we were in the first 3,000 people or so. The line just got longer and longer, and actually wound all the way to the other side of the stadium. Some people waited over 2 hours and missed a significant part of the game, so we were glad that we bit the bullet and waited when we did.
