Am I Forgiven Because I Am Sorry?

We trample the blood of the Son of God underfoot if we think we are forgiven because we are sorry for our sins. The only reason for the forgiveness of our sins by God, and the infinite depth of His promise to forget them, is the death of Jesus Christ. Our repentance is merely the result of our personal realization of the atonement by the Cross of Christ, which He has provided for us. “. . . Christ Jesus . . . became for us wisdom from God–and righteousness and sanctification and redemption . . .” (1 Corinthians 1:30). Once we realize that Christ has become all this for us, the limitless joy of God begins in us. And wherever the joy of God is not present, the death sentence is still in effect.

No matter who or what we are, God restores us to right standing with Himself only by means of the death of Jesus Christ. God does this, not because Jesus pleads with Him to do so but because He died. It cannot be earned, just accepted. All the pleading for salvation which deliberately ignores the Cross of Christ is useless. It is knocking at a door other than the one which Jesus has already opened. We protest by saying, “But I don’t want to come that way. It is too humiliating to be received as a sinner.” God’s response, through Peter, is, “. . . there is no other name . . . by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). What at first appears to be heartlessness on God’s part is actually the true expression of His heart. There is unlimited entrance His way. “In Him we have redemption through His blood . . .” (Ephesians 1:7). To identify with the death of Jesus Christ means that we must die to everything that was never a part of Him.

God is just in saving bad people only as He makes them good. Our Lord does not pretend we are all right when we are all wrong. The atonement by the Cross of Christ is the propitiation God uses to make unholy people holy.

A Hobbit Journey: Discovering the Enchantment of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth by Matthew Dickerson

Just finished reading A Hobbit Journey by Matthew Dickerson. This is a fabulous, fascinating inductive study of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. I absolutely enjoyed the read and my understanding of Tolkien’s literary works as well as the man himself was profoundly deepened. If you are a fan of The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Silmarillion, or any of Tolkien’s writings, this is a must read!

Local Impact: Safe Families

Yesterday I had the privilege of leading a Local Impact team from Southwest Community Church to work with Safe Families. Our objective was to have fun with the children so that some of the host parents could enjoy a morning off. We had a lot of fun playing kickball, tag, football, and playing in the sprinklers with the kids. Safe Families is a wonderful organization that “[offers] sanctuary to thousands of children, minimizing the risk for abuse or neglect and giving parents the time and tools they need to help their families thrive. The ultimate goal is to strengthen and support parents so they can become Safe Families for their own children.” To learn more about Safe Families click here

Happy Birthday to the Coolest 11 Year Old Girl on the Planet!

Today my baby girl turns 11 years old. Wow! We are so proud of Natalia! She loves God and has a great passion for helping her friends know Christ. She is super funny, and an awesome softball player. This year so many of her friends from school and softball came to church and heard about Christ because she invested in relationships and invited them. She also tried her hand at softball, and in her first season made the All-Star team. Really neat!

Baptism Mania at Southwest!

This weekend at Southwest Community Church we had 35 people signed up to be baptized. I had met with 5 middle school girls during the week and was all ready to lead them in this great step of faith and obedience. Awesome! Pastor Gerald, however, asked us to be praying that 100 people would be baptized. He did a brief teaching on baptism then invited anyone who wanted to be baptized to make their way to the baptismals. I loved what he said next: “This is a no-excuses Sunday. You might say, ‘I didn’t come prepared.’ That’s OK. We came prepared for you! We’ve got t-shirts, shorts, towels, and even garbage bags for you to put on the seats in your cars.”

So, how many people got baptized? 299! That’s right … two-hundred-and-ninety-nine people! We ran out of t-shirts after 100 and there was a mad scramble for more towels. What an incredible day in the kingdom of God!

One back story … my daughter Claudia came up to me with tears in her eyes, excited because her friend Julia Lamper, whom she invited to church this past year had accepted Christ and was baptized today! Invest and invite! God will use you!

Pray with me that fruit will remain!
